This is one of the most common questions I am asked about birth. I understand why!

Who wants to hurt?? Not me! You can prevent unnecessary pain. You can postpone pain. You can rearrange pain. However, you cannot entirely eliminate pain. Not even with drugs or an epidural.

What does it mean to postpone pain? Well, postponing pain means that you won't feel pain now, but you'll feel it later. When you're having a baby, you are participating in a normal, physiological event. It is an extraordinary event! It is very physical, emotional, and spiritual. There will likely be pain.

What does it mean to rearrange pain? Your doula is so glad you asked! YOU can decide to experience pain now or later. You can rearrange the order of your experience. Your doula can explain how.

What does it mean to prevent unnecessary pain? Something is called unnecessary because it didn't have to happen. Could it be that you don't have to experience all the pain possible? YES. Your doula can show you how. You do not have to be tense while experiencing contractions. Your doula's job is to provide comfort, massage, alternate positions, remind you to relax, hold space for you to experience ALL the emotions.

Your perception of pain is often a result of tensing up, being afraid, and not understanding what is going on. This is where your doula comes in. Your doula helps you remember not to tense up. Your doula helps you understand why your body feels the way it does during labor. Your doula explains what is going on.
