  This is one of the most common questions I am asked about birth. I understand why! Who wants to hurt?? Not me! You can prevent unnecessary pain. You can postpone pain. You can rearrange pain. However, you cannot entirely eliminate pain. Not even with drugs or an epidural. What does it mean to postpone pain? Well, postponing pain means that you won't feel pain now, but you'll feel it later. When you're having a baby, you are participating in a normal, physiological event. It is an extraordinary event! It is very physical, emotional, and spiritual. There will likely be pain. What does it mean to rearrange pain? Your doula is so glad you asked! YOU can decide to experience pain now or later. Knowledge of what is normal and what is sickness, injury, or dangerous can dispel fear. Joy A conversation can provide joy in the journey to empowerment. Contractions Are like waves. You see contractions coming from far away. You can get ready for  them.  They can wash over you. You can ride waves or be crashed and dragged by them.  Spilling Waves     Spilling waves are waves that are produced when the ocean floor has a gentle slope. As the wave approaches the shore, it slowly releases energy, and the crest gradually spills forward down its face until it is all whitewater. These waves take more time to break than any other wave.
